Caldera Blanca - a 40-minute climb to the top. Your reward: a sweeping view over Timanfaya's black and red volcanic landscape, and from up here, Tinajo and much of the island laid out below.

secret spot close to tinajo

One of the unique black beaches on Lanzarote.

A small, hidden spot close by.

Not really for swimming — more for standing still and taking it in.

a defining force on the island

Why everybody talks about César Manrique.

The island owes much of its untouched charm — low white houses, blue-shuttered windows by the sea, green ones inland — to one man: César Manrique. His sculptures still mark the roundabouts across the island. His homes, built into lava bubbles, and the concert hall at Jameos del Agua, are worth the visit. Timeless work — a union of people and nature. Here during my visit in front of the pool in James del Agua.

Great View from the Risco de Famara

Our Favorite Cafés & Restaurants in Playa Honda

Famara Beach

Lanzarote has world-class conditions for surf and windsurf.

Spots everywhere you look around the island - But remember, you're a guest here. Locals expect respect, and right of way.

This view is on foot only.

A short hike up the Risco just past Haría rewards you with a sweep from Famara to La Graciosa. Even when the wind picks up, the sheer scale of the place takes hold of you.

Doing a big shop at Hiperdino in Playa Honda?

Leave time to walk the beach promenade and take a swim in the sea. Stop at Orilla Bar, or try our favourite Indian named Spicy Papadom, or visit our friends at Restaurant Emmax.

For beach-break surfers, Famara delivers — It's home to the island's surf schools, and no shortage of cafés.

Enjoy some of the most spectacular sunsets with view on the risco and one of Lanzarotes largest beaches.
