The island owes much of its untouched charm — low white houses, blue-shuttered windows by the sea, green ones inland — to one man: César Manrique. His sculptures still mark the roundabouts across the island. His homes, built into lava bubbles, and the concert hall at Jameos del Agua, are worth the visit.
